The Australian Fencing Federation notes with sadness the passing of Australian Olympic fencer John Humphreys on 14th September 2017 aged 85.

John was an Australian National Epee Champion (1962 and 1963) and dual Olympian, representing Australia in epee in 1960 (Rome) and 1964 (Tokyo).

John also represented Australia at the World Fencing Championships in Montreal (1967) and Grenoble (1974), and at the Commonwealth Games in Perth (1962) and Jamaica (1966).

John continued fencing as a veteran, most recently winning the 70+ men’s epee event at the 2006 Australian and Oceania Open and Veteran Fencing Championships.

A Queenslander who played a role in establishing the original state fencing organisation, John was a life member of the Queensland Fencing Association.

A service celebrating John’s life will be held at Centenary Memorial Gardens, Wacol Station Road, Sumner, Brisbane, commencing at 1 pm on Monday, 25th September, 2017. (source: http://tributes.couriermail.com.au/notice/440912010

For referees looking to upgrade their qualifications, the Fencing Confederation of Asia has announced it will run an additional C Licence seminar and exam in Dubai from 14th-17th December 2017. There will also be a seminar and exam run in conjunction with the 2018 Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Dubai.

Referees will be invited to nominate to the AFF to participate in these courses closer to the time.

Australia's pool of internationally qualified referees across all weapons continues to grow following examination success for Rob Di Pasquale (foil) and Stephen Darragh (sabre) at the C Licence Refereeing Seminar and Exam held in Bangkok, Thailand last week.

Congratulations Rob and Stephen.

The AFF is delighted to announce that Italian fencing manufacturer Negrini Fencing Line has agreed to sponsor our Men's Foil Team by providing a set of equipment (mask, whites, bag etc) to each World Champs team member. Certain additional discounts on equipment purchases will also be made available. Negrini's support is a well deserved recognition of the gains made by our Men's Foil Team in recent years, and a reflection of the strong bonds between the Australian and Italian fencing communities. We welcome Negrini as a valued partner of Australian fencing!
